Finland, oh Finland.
The land of snow and ice. The land of one-week-long summer.
The land of melancholic music and wooden saunas.
The place where we look at our toes when we talk to other people,
where we’d rather die that do small talk. My wonderful home.
I’ve been living in Boston, Massachusetts for quite some time now.
Although its a nice place to live in, it doesn’t beat my beloved home country. That’s why I decided to list some of the things that I miss from FINLAND.
This is the number one grief that I have. Like guys…Finnish food tastes effin’ awesome. All the “traditional must have Finnish foods” (that you see in some stupid travel shows) are just overly hyped and mostly weird and not my thing (talking about Karjalanpaisti, Hernekeitto and Mammi).
But normal homemade food, now that’s my jam and tastes just like heaven. Salads made from fresh Finnish vegetables, meat pastries from the towns square of my hometown, meatballs, skimmed milk, Karjalanpiirakat, homemade pizza, Hesburger….and sandwich cake.
Oh god I’m drooling when I’m writing this. Moving on….
2. NOT HAVING TO DO THE CHIT CHAT-THINGY
One great thing about Boston is that people are usually super busy and don’t have time for the small talk. But still, they wanna do it more than anyone ever in Finland. Sometimes I feel like I’m being super rude when I don’t wanna share my life story to the cashier and the long line behind me. SORRY!
But I’m just going to say Hi and throw you the money.
In Finland this is perfectly normal. Fewer the words – more pleasant the shopping experience.
3. FINNISH TV-SHOWS
Ahhh….what’s better than spend a Friday or a Saturday night (or the whole weekend whatevs) staying in and watching your favorite weekend humor/gameshows stuffing your mouth with all the best weekend snacks.
TV-shows that I miss: POSSE, Vain Elamaa, those horrible Finnish lifestyle-shows, PUTOUS and some other stupid humor-shows.
4. WHEN SUN DOESN’T SET DURING SUMMER
It’s the most wonderful time of the year lallalalalla
5. HOW FINLAND SMELLS
So fresh. I’m being serious here. Like….You can just take a deep breath and feel the freshness filling your lungs. Healthy.
6. HOW FINLAND LOOKS
7. NORMAL SUPERMARKETS
…Like Prisma and Citymarket. The closest thing in America for these is Walmart. Which is kind of a different case. Like is it so hard to have just a normal huge store full of stuff relatively close to you? And no-one judges you if you wanna shop there.
8. WANDERING AROUND IN FORESTS
And getting lost after a while cos I took my Game of Thrones solo-cosplay attempt too far.
Dad: “Maria did you fall? Are you okey?”
Me (laying on the grass cos i was just too exhausted to walk): Yeah i fell down, im fine.
And there’s forests just eeeeverywhere.
9. SWIMMING IN LAKES
Do I need to say more? Where I live, there’s like 10 beaches by walking distance.
Ah the BLISS of diving into a LAKE. God….i can’t even describe the feeling. I am a lake-mermaid. But I do love oceans too. So yeah.
10. MY FAMILY
Obviously I had to mention them. They are the reason I miss Finland like crazy, and they have made the place so wonderful for me that I can’t wait to go back again and see them.
I love them so much. I hope they know.
